Although sidelined at that time, Coco made some TV commercials until he was offered to do an independent film titled "Masahista" under the tutelage of director Brillante Mendoza. The said indie film was shown in Philippine cinemas on October 19, 2005 and his performance in that movie earned him the Young Critics Circle Best Actor Award in 2006. That indie movie catapulted the career of Coco Martin into stardom in which he will soon be recognized as the Prince of Philippine Independent Films. Coco Martin was also included in another indie film titled "Kaleldo" (Summer Heat) in 2006. It is still directed by Brillante Mendoza and this time, the movie garnered some international awards such as the Durban international Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Cherry Pie Picache. It also won the critic's prize for the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) in the 2007 Jeonju International Film Festival in Korea. Also in that year, Coco joined GMA Network, ABS-CBN's rival, and did some projects there. He started with some appearances in "Daisy Siete" and became a member of the boy group "The Studs". But although he was already in GMA 7, Coco Martin continued to do more indie films. He starred in a gay oriented film "Daybreak" with actor Paolo Rivero. It was produced by Bicycle Productions and directed by Adolfo Borinaga Alix, Jr. The film was rated R-18 by MTRCB. The movie was shown uncut despite the nudity involved because the members of the board was impressed by the quality of the movie. Another gay oriented indie film was his next projet with actor Baron Geisler titled "Jay". It was written and directed by Francis Xavier Pasion and the movie was a finalist in the 2008 Cinemalaya filmfest. Another notable performance of Coco Martin is his role in the indie film "Kinatay" where he played the role of an errand boy for a syndicate who collects protection money from businesses in Manila. The movie earned the Prix de la Mise en Scene Best Director Award for director Brillante Mendoza during the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Coco Martin also starred in various indie films such as "Nars", "Tambolista", "Ataul For Rent", "Condo", "Serbis" and "Biyaheng Lupa" which cemented his reign as the prince of indie movies in the Philippines. But despite his budding career in the independent films, Coco Martin was not still given much attention by his mother studio (GMA-7) at that time. It was that reason that he returned to ABS-CBN and immediately given an assignment in the afternoon series "Ligaw Na Bulaklak" top billed by Roxanne Guinoo. He played the role of Chris and Ronel Alegro in the series which has given Coco much exposure in the mainstream television. It was then followed by another supporting role in "Tayong Dalawa" which was topbilled by Jake Cuenca and Gerald Anderson. Coco then appeared in "Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo" which was sa prime time soap opera opposite Kris Aquino, Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson and Gabby Concepcion. Coco Martin's performance was noticed by critics and won the Best Antagonist Award in the Guillermo Mendoza Awards. Coco Martin had his first lead role in "Tonyong Bayawak" taken from the "Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla". It was also in the same year where he starred in his first mainstream movie titled "Sa 'yo Lamang" with Christher de Leon, Lorna Tolentino, Bea Alonzo, Zanjoe Marudo, Diether Ocampo and other big names in Philippine movies. He also starred in "1DOL", a prime time musical comedy-drama TV series whom he co-starred with Sarah Geronimo and Sam Milby. Another indie film titled "Noy" was added to his name in 2010. It was rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board and th eofficial entry of the Philippines for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. Although the film was not able to earn any award, it opened a new horizon for the movie career of Coco Martin as he conquered the US with that fate. In 2011, Coco Martin was given his biggest break in the prime time hit series "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin" where he played the dual role of twins Alexander del Tierro and Javier del Tierro. It was a very big hit as it raked high ratings througout it's whowing. It even had it's season 2 immediately started after the season one enden due to the high ratings it gained all throughout the showing of season 1. Coco played opposite her love interest Maja Salvador whom he admitted his real life crush. |
